Ricardo Lopez Calvar, Master of MFV “Suffolk Challenger” appeared in the Ascension Magistrates’ Court on Friday 28 January 2005, having been remanded in custody on 24 January on a charge under s.4 Fishery Limits (Ascension) Ordinance. He faced five further alleged offences.
Ricardo Lopez Calvar, Master of MFV “Suffolk Challenger” appeared in the Ascension Magistrates’ Court on Friday 28 January 2005, having been remanded in custody on 24 January on a charge under s.4 Fishery Limits (Ascension) Ordinance. He faced five further alleged offences.
The Court heard that the vessel, which is owned by BURELAMAR SA (Mr Jesus Cayon) of Lugo, Spain, left Georgetown Harbour on 27 January in contravention of directions that it remain until the charges had been adjudicated upon.
The Defendant, for whom Stephen Swabey, of Messrs Thomas Cooper and Stibbard, Solicitors of London, is acting, was remanded in custody until 9 February 2005. The Attorney General will be reviewing the case over the weekend, including the circumstances in which the vessel left Ascension, and considering what further action can be taken. In the meantime, no further information can be issued, in case pending or future legal action might be prejudiced.
