Notice from the Administrator

Award of Contract to Undertake a Review of Fisheries in

Ascension Islandís Exclusive Fishing Zone

I am pleased to announce that the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) is to be awarded a contract to undertake an independent review of the management of fisheries within Ascension Islandís 200 mile Exclusive Fishing Zone. The review will look to recommend options for the sustainable management of Ascensionís fisheries and marine biodiversity.

This review is an important step in developing the long-term strategy for the management of Ascensionís fisheries. While this review is being undertaken, the Ascension Island Government has suspended the sale of licences for longline fishing. Cefas is expected to submit their initial recommendations to the Administrator of Ascension Island in September 2014.

I congratulate Cefas on their success in securing this contract and assure them of the Ascension Island Governmentís full support for their work. Ascension Island Government is committed to the sustainable and professional management of its fisheries and wider biodiversity.

Colin Wells

Administrator of Ascension Island
