Ascension : PUBLIC SOLICITOR’S OFFICE
Submitted by The Islander (Mario Anthony) 03.02.2014 (Article Archived on 20.02.2014)

I have reached the end of my visit to Ascension Island and I have been grateful for the welcome I have received this visit.

I have reached the end of my visit to Ascension Island and I have been grateful for the welcome I have received this visit.

I am delighted to announce that I am to appoint new lay advocates for Ascension, Shelley Wade and Barry Francis. Thank you to them for "stepping up," I have enjoyed working with them and am pleased that the training went so well.

Alex Neary Phillips and Martin Richardson will be reserve Lay Advocates. Alex Neary Phillips will be newly appointed to this role. Martin Richardson is retiring as a full time Lay Advocate and I thank him for his hard work over recent years.

The role of Lay Advocate is an extremely important one and Shelley and Barry with Johnny Hobson and Caz Yon will continue to represent members of this community, discretely and effectively.

The Lay Advocates can be contacted directly if you require assistance.

Helen Scott, a qualified UK solicitor will continue to represent the Public Solicitors office on Ascension. Helen’s role is to assist with civil matters (disputes between individuals, drafting wills and other legal documents). Helen cannot be involved in any dispute with AIG as a result of her being married to the Solicitor General. Helen does not represent those alleged to have committed criminal offences, again that is the responsibility of the Lay Advocates. Helen can facilitate contact with my office on St. Helena and any of the Lay Advocates.

Helen, can be contacted at the office in the courthouse on 6839, between 8.00-12.30, Monday to Friday or on assistant.public.solicitor@atlantis.co.ac. Lay Advocates will also use this room as and when required.

I can continue to be contacted directly on St. Helena on 00 290 23008, or on publicsolicitor@helanta.co.sh. The office website is www.publicsolicitor.com .

I return to Ascension on 16th March as we have a Supreme Court sitting, I look forward to seeing you again.
