Editorís Comment

January draws to a close this week and already Valentineís Day looms larger than ever, reminding us that 2014 is plodding along!  Being prepared is never a bad thing so this is a timely reminder to buy your gifts, cards and plan your special surprises for your loved ones!

This edition also brings news of price increases which this time of year usually heralds.  The 1 April is the start of the new fiscal year for most companies and the letter to Babcockís customers speaks of a small inflationary increase in utility prices.  I looked up reasons why financial years usually start in April1, and not at the start of each calendar year, and one of the suggested reasons was that no one wanted to spend their Christmas and New Yearís holidays poring over figures.  Well, unsurprisingly, thatís the accountants sorted, but for the rest of us price rises are probably best announced later in the year once the post-Christmas depression is over and customers have more money in their pockets!  Happy Days!

Have a good week!  Nicola J

1A more credible answer is that it coincides with the Income Tax Act which was enacted on 1 April 1962

I am a Spanish boy, 17 years old.  I love geography and stamps. I have read about Ascension Island a lot I hope someday can visit you, is a big dream. I write you because I would like if some of you can send me a letter from there, I would like to know more about your island and any information would be welcome but I understand is expensive so with a simple letter or postcard with stamp would be wonderful.
I know is a strange request, hope you can do your best. THANKS A LOT!!!!

Regards, Jaime
