Ascension Island Heritage Society is seeking to recruit a postgraduate or masters student for a 4-6 week project cataloguing and archiving the museumís collection.

The start date for this project is flexible to suit the successful candidate.

Ascension Island is a United Kingdom Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic.  The Heritage Society was founded in 1966; the Society is an entirely voluntary body whose aims are to awaken public concern in, and appreciation of, the geography, history, natural history and architecture of Ascension Island, and to secure the preservation of features of historic or public interest. The Society relies on public donations and small profits from the sale of pamphlets for survival.

You will work almost entirely independently, but with support from Heritage members as required.   You will be responsible for the care and the documentation of the collections - cataloguing the entire collection, leading on collections care and contributing fully to the wider ambitions of the Museum. You will lead on the preparation and management of displays and play an important role in the complete modernisation of the museum.

You will also advise on a preventative conservation strategy for the Museum to ensure that care of the historic properties and collections meets, where possible, UK standards.

You will possess an in-depth knowledge of good practice in preservation and an awareness of conservation theory and practices.

The position involves all aspects of collections management: acquisition, registration, cataloguing, de-accessioning, digitization, environmental control, loan processing, insurance, records computerisation and storage maintenance.

You are not expected to possess in-depth knowledge of Ascension Island prior to starting.

The ability to work on your own initiative is essential. You will have a keen interest in working with heritage material. You will be working alone on this project so strong ICT and communications skills are required, plus an eye for detail, the ability to transcribe information accurately and good concentration skills. You will also be able to meet targets and deadlines.

You must:

         Have a degree or masters in museum studies;

         Be mature and reliable. This is essential:  you will be working alone, caring for important historical documents on behalf of the Ascension Island Government and assuming responsibility for the long-running and success of the museum;

         Be willing to work unconventional hours including early mornings, some evenings and weekends.

         A local living allowance of £100 p.w.;

         One return flight to Ascension Island from RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire, UK (worth £969);

         Rent free self-catering or hotel accommodation, including all household utilities if applicable.

You will be responsible for all other costs incurred and are required to arrange full medical and travel insurance coverage (including medical evacuation) for the duration of your stay.

APPLICATIONS: To apply, please send a CV (including references) and a brief cover letter to Helen Scott (  explaining why you are interested in the position and what you can bring to the project. Closing date for applications is Friday 28th February 2014.

For more information about living and working on Ascension Island, please visit the official website at or find us on Facebook @ Ascension Island Heritage.

Applicants must be willing to undergo a full medical before leaving the UK and will be subject to entry control permits on Ascension Island.
