The group formed at the Jubilee Pavilion found a few new faces. Mike visiting from the Falklands, Maz, Lady Boy George’s significant other and Phyllis, who claims to not remember her St. Helenian Hash name. Just how embarrassing does a name have to be tosuppress it from your memory?? The hash brief was short, 3 circle checks, a good cardio workout to the first two, a steep down slope, loose rocks and the ever present dangers on Ascension, feral sheep and zombie rabbits. The On-On sounded and the pack set off, heading up past the HMS Hood guns to the drainage route and the first circle check, with views of Georgetown. The trail followed the drainage route running into the main road, then heading up the hill to the summit of Cross Hill, normally is off limits, the hash had been given special permission, got a rarely seen view of Ascension.
Cross Hill while noted by earlier visitors as a navigational aid, was first named by Richard Everard in 1693. While exploring the island the sailors found a cross on the summit, probably put up as a beacon. In 1752 PehrOsbeck, a Swedish priest, visiting the island wrote “I went to a conic mountain a good way of the place where we landed. It was steep, and of difficult access, because with each step the sand and stones rolled down; the heat increased, and I was forced to rest several times…”Some things have not changed.
After a break for picture taking the trail headed back down the road, veering off to the Eastern side of the hill for a tricky descent with the surface alternating between scree and hard stone. The younger hashers, taking the lead, had to be redirected a couple of times, the hare having had to backtrack a couple of times to find a path down. While waiting for everyone to get down to the 3rd and last circle check, the younger hashers got impatient and struck off around the base of Cross Hill, leaving the elders to take a more leisurely pace back to the Jubilee Pavilion.
After repairing one of the Hairy Twins the après broke up into generational groups with the younger hashers off to explore the HMS Hood guns, and the elders gathered un the Pavilion to solve the world’s ills. The topics ranged from Emily Dickenson, a slightly disturbing segue into sea stories then back to made up Scottish words. The après broke up when the sun went down and the words, not normally heard on Ascension, that it had gotten cold. Obviously all the hashers have been on the island long enough their blood has thinned!
