Ascension : From St Mary's Church
Submitted by The Islander (Islander Editors) 07.03.2013 (Article Archived on 21.03.2013)

Join us this Sunday for our MOTHERING SUNDAY SERVICE.

St Mary's Church

Join us this Sunday for our MOTHERING SUNDAY SERVICE. We are deeply grateful to Sgt. Nigel Atkins of the Ascension Island Base for enabling us to have daffodils on this special day.  The service will be followed by the baptism of baby Mitchell . Those who wish to attend the  service of baptism will be welcome.

The fourth Sunday in Lent ( Mothering Sunday) is also known as Refreshment Sunday : it refers to the old custom in England of allowing servants a holiday to  return home to their mothers with a small gift on this Sunday. The origins of the custom may well be the Epistle used at the Eucharist in medieval times which refers to “ Jerusalem the mother of us all.”  On this Sunday, people used  to walk to their cathedral church, the mother church of the Diocese, to worship and receive Holy Communion. It is hoped that children, and those from any Christian denomination will feel encouraged to join us for worship on this special day.
