Ascension : Ascension Island smokers urged to ‘swap fags for swag’ on 30th national No Smoking Day Submitted by The Islander (Islander Editors) 07.03.2013 (Article Archived on 21.03.2013)
Smokers on Ascension Island are being encouraged to ‘swap fags for swag’and consider the financial benefits of quitting, this month on the 30th anniversary of No Smoking Day.
Nearly
one in six UK adults smoke and the percentage of smokers on Ascension Island is
arguably even higher. UK figures, however, show two thirds want to quit.
This year smokers are being encouraged to focus on what
they could afford to buy were they to quit for a day (saving £3.50 ),a week (£24.50),
a month (£105) and a year (£1277).
The
Dental Clinic, Hospital, and Base Clinics will be providing advice and support to
help smokers ditch the cigarettes for good on Wed 13 March – No Smoking Day.
One of
the biggest incentives for smokers to quit comes from considering the real
amount of money they spend on cigarettes and thinking about what themselves and
their family could afford if they were to give up for good.
By
tallying up the exact amount of money that could be saved, smokers can work
towards an actual goal – be it a new pair of shoes, a dream holiday, or even
eventually towards a new car.
Did you
know at current Ascension prices, a smoker who smokes a packet of cigarettes a
day, will over their lifetime spend :-
£63,875
– “Up in Smoke”! – enough to buy a top of the range Range Rover,
whilst
UK smokers spending presently £7/day on a packet of cigarettes will spend
£127,750.00 !!!!!!!!
No
Smoking Day provides the perfect opportunity for people to join others on Ascensionattempting
to quit on the same day. This is why the medical serviceseffortsin spreading
the word about the support available are so important,to help many make their
first steps towards a healthier and wealthier, smoke free life.
The
annual health campaign, run by the British Heart Foundation, is now in its 30th
year and helped more than 760,000 people quit smoking last year and inspired
another 1.5 million to seek out information to help them quit in future.
If you
are interested in wishing to “give up the fags”, please contact any of the
various medical services on the island where you`ll find support and advice or
even a good scale and polish at the Dental Clinic to get rid of all that tar
and bad taste!
