The Final of the eleventh ‘Flipper’ Trophy Knockout Tournament saw the Two Boats Rowdies meet the Cool Runnings.
The day got off to a good start with the mixed friendly game taking place with the ‘Mixed Retards’ playing the ‘Mixed In-betweeners’ of which there was a draw and the ‘Mixed Retards’ Team won on the penalty Shoot out. There was some dodgy refereeing going on and one or two people got booked by Referee Johnny Hobson, but not sure as to why!! Nevertheless, all players enjoyed themselves and fun was had by all.
Cool Runnings made their entrance arriving in a bath tub to cool themselves off (obviously the adrenaline and pressures of being in the Final was too much for them)!
The walk-out was then done by the Teams and their Team Managers and all Football Officials for the day to be met and greeted by Miss Penny Bennett and Geoffrey Augustus – Acting Chief Executive, Ascension Island. They all took their place to stand in line to observe the one minute silence in memory of Andrew John Bennett and Edward Carl Robinson.
The whistle blew ending the one minute silence and the Game soon got underway.
Both teams had equal possession of the ball as they battled away in their eagerness to score early in the game.
Tony King took a shot at the goal, but it went straight to Cool Runnings goal keeper Gavin ‘Chocolate’ Yon’s hands.
A free kick was taken by Tyler Benjamin in which he took a shot at the goal, but it was headed away by Johnny Stroud.
Paul Weldrick crossed the ball over and Tony King headed it into the net putting Two Boats Rowdies into the lead very early into the game. Chocolate went to save it, but injured himself and had to come off and Simeon Coleman then stepped into goal.
Melvyn Moyce took a corner in which the ball dropped just outside the front of the goal, but Cool Runnings defence managed to prevent a further goal being scored.
Mycle Williams took a shot, but it went straight to the keeper’s hands.
Freddie Wynter kicked the ball towards the goal, but Simeon made a brilliant save.
Mycle Williams then had another chance to score and this time he placed his shot into the far corner of the goal bringing Two Boats Rowdies two goals into the lead.
 Cool Runnings
The half-time whistle blew and the score was 2 - 0 to the Two Boats Rowdies.
The second half commenced and the Tempo was now stepped up as Cool Runnings tried their utmost to score.
Jean Cadence took a long range shot from outside the box, but it went only just past the goal post.
Tyler Benjamin took a shot from out wide which swerved towards the goal, but was headed away again by Johnny Stroud.
Mycle Williams came off and Alvin Henry came on.
Tom Davis kicked the ball towards the goal, but TB Rowdies’ Keeper ‘Blue-coat’ fisted it out.
Ashley ‘Dutch’ Lawrence then got possession of the ball and took a shot landing the ball into the corner of the net.
Cool Runnings were triumphant – they had scored and were now ever–hopeful of scoring again to equalise. Meanwhile Cool Running’s’ Supporters were sounding the Siren in jubilation.
Melvyn Moyce took a shot from out side the box which skimmed the tops of the player’s heads, but went straight to the keeper’s hands.
Tyler Benjamin took the ball down the wing with Colin ‘Shoe’ hot on his heels and kicked it out of play.
Colin ‘Shoe’ then got possession of the ball and ran past a few players to beat the goal keeper and just tapped it into the goal, bringing TB Rowdies into the lead by 3 – 1.
Christopher Appasamy came off and Robert Anthony came on.
Both teams continued to play hard knowing that time was drawing near for the full time whistle to be blown.
The score at Full-time was 3 – 1 to the Two Boats Rowdies.
The TB Rowdies had won the ‘Flipper’ Tournament for the second year running.
Both Teams played really well throughout the whole Tournament and kept the spectators well entertained.
A big Thank-you to the Participants, Team Captains, Referees and Linesmen for their contribution in making the eleventh ‘Flipper’ Football Tournament Final the success that it was!
