Meeting on Long Beach down by the Saint’s Club beach house, the hashers familiar with this week’s hare wondered where we were going today?

Apres: Tom Thumb

Meeting on Long Beach down by the Saint’s Club beach house, the hashers familiar with this week’s hare wondered where we were going today? Up Cross Hill? Over the coastline to Comfortless? Kerry, new to the island, was starting to have second thoughts about the whole hashing thing after hearing stories of past BladeRunner hashes. The brief took place with some odd wet stuff falling from the sky, since it does not rain on Ascension no one was quite sure just what it was.

The hazard brief was short, only four circles, the usual sharp rocks, pointy plants and new for this area was rusty metal and glass. Also the news that Danger Mouse had helped set this hash and had left us a special circle check was a little disquieting especially since he had used the work excuse to avoid coming on the hash.

The trail led us to the north up and over the rocks behind Long Beach. This area is now covered with Mexican Thorn but for years was a garbage tip for various island organizations. Hidden by the plants is an interesting collection of trash, probably dating back to the 1940’s. Barrels, runway matting, broken glass and the debris of 100 years of communications work on the island are scattered about. Also a few classic automobiles now rusted beyond repair. The final circle check turned out to have not only an interesting collection of handcrafted war movie props but also an example of post-modernist interruptive sculpture.  It also proved beyond any question the BladeRunner and Danger Mouse have way too much time on their hands. After the sound of the mighty vuvuzela was heard the band wandered back to Long Beach, the trail taking us back through more curious relics of the island’s past.

With no ladies present the post hash conversation covered the variety of topics that men discuss, German World Cup football, zombie rabbits, the origins of Hash names and the excellent Ascension sunsets. Although easy by the usual BladeRunner/ Danger Mouse standards this week’s hash still explored a part of the island rarely seen.

Bored? Tired of surfing Ascension’s variety of telly channels? Get off the sofa and come out and hash!

Next week:  4.30pm- Two Boats Club

Hares: Herr Taff
