Ascension : From The Editor - Kitty
Submitted by The Islander (Islander Editors) 21.03.2012 (Article Archived on 04.04.2012)

Hello Readers, Don’t forget that the clocks will go forward an hour in the UK at 2am on Sunday, 25 March.

This doesn’t really affect us here on Ascension except when we are trying to get in contact with someone in the UK, only to find out that they have left for home already.  Personally I will find it rather frustrating because effective Monday, I will be missing Emmerdale and Coronation Street! Maybe our lunchtimes could be arranged to run at BST! Well it was a thought!

I decided this week to include an article about the 38th Combat Engineer Regiment who came here on 30th March 1942 with a mission to build an airfield in 90 days.  Amazingly their mission was accomplished despite bouts of diarrhea, lack of supplies, food shortages and droughts. We pay tribute to those unforgettable men.

The airfield played a pivotal role in both the Second World War and the Falklands Crisis.

Have a great week!  Kitty
