The Final of the Tenth ‘Flipper’ Football Tournament saw the Two Boats Rowdies play the Scouts.
The day got off to a good start with the mixed friendly game taking place of which there was a draw and The ‘Rest of the Island’ won on the penalty shoot out.
The Two Boats Rowdies made their entrance arriving in their coach (a truck that matched the colour of their shirts), and did a drive around the Sports Field.
Whilst the Scouts ‘came marching in’ to the beat of Ceddie Henry, ‘Philly’ Yon and Luke Bennett’s drums and Deon Leo playing on the Bugle. Some of the younger Scouts led the way carrying the Scout’s Flags.
The walk out was then done by the Teams and their Managers to line up to greet Andrew’s parents Joyce and Jimmy Bennett and Geoffrey Augustus, Acting CE, Cable and Wireless, Ascension Island.
There was a one minute silence in Memory of Andrew John Bennett and the late Edward Carl Robinson who passed away this year.
The Game soon got under way.
The Scouts had the ball in their possession for the best part of the first half with Geordie Peters missing one or two close chances of scoring.
Ashley ‘Dutch’ saw a chance and took a long range shot, but it went wide off the goal.
Ashley Clingham then saw a chance and made an attempt to score from out wide, but the ball went straight to Bluey’s hands.
Mario Anthony took a shot, but went just past the goal post.
Tyler Benjamin ran down the left wing and made an attempt to score, but it only just went past the goal post as well.
Jon Slater then came running through the players with the ball and kicked it way past the goal.
The game had started to heat up when both Tyler and Geordie ran down the right wing and the ball was kicked across to Ashley Clingham, but he failed to make connection and the ball ran off the field.
Jon Slater then went running down the right wing again, but ‘Pukcto’ came running out kicked the ball out of play.
Chris Owen passed to Mario ‘Peaches’ who kicked it towards the goal, but the Scouts defence cleared it.
A free kick was then given when Darren ‘Mousey’ who fouled Ashley ‘Dutch’. Geordie took the free kick, but it went just over the Cross bar.
Ashley Clingham then gave a free kick away when he fouled ‘BBC’ and the free kick was taken by Darren, but Scouts defence cleared it.
Steve ‘Rowdy’ then kicked the ball past the goalie and it bounced into the goal – resulting in ‘Puckto’ falling. It was the first goal for Two Boats Rowdies. Crowds on the Two Boats Rowdies’ stool went wild with shouts of Hurrah! In the meantime Cheryl was still winding her siren and the Cheer Leaders were cheering away – slightly ‘slurring from having drunken so much of their locally made ‘punch’ called ‘Urmmmmmm’.
Chris Owen did a run down the right wing and kicked the ball across the foot of the goal resulting in it going out past the goal post.
Colin ‘Shoe’ then had a chance to score and the goalie came running out and fell over, but Tyler cleared the ball over the top of the Cross bar – thus preventing Two Boats Rowdies from scoring again.
The whistle then blew and the half-time score was Two Boats Rowdies 1 – Scouts – 0.
The second half commenced with Ashley Clingham doing a brilliant pass to Geordie who then made an attempt to score, but kicked it out.
Ashley ‘Dutch’ passed the ball to Chocolate who took a shot from out wide only to be headed away by ‘Shoe’.
Chris Owen took a long range shot, but was headed away by Nicky ‘Rings’ Herne.
Jon Slater then received a pass from out wide and kicked it into the corner of the goal. This was the second goal to bring Two Boats Rowdies into the lead.
Chris Owen then ran down the left wing and took a shot at the goal, but was kicked out by Aaron ‘Boot’.
Chae ‘Bunny’ won a tackle of Geordie and then fell, but Darren ‘Mousey’ reached it in time to kick it out.
Mario Anthony passed the ball to Corey who turned and took a shot, but the ball went out wide behind the goal.
Tyler then passed the ball across the goal, but Ashley ‘Dutch’ in his eagerness to score kicked it up high over the cross bar.
Corey was substituted and Mark Anthony went on.
Andrew ‘BBC’ was substituted and ‘Jussie’ Wade came on.
Chris Owen then did a run at the Scouts defence ran around them and fired the ball into the net. The Crowds went wild – Two Boats Rowdies had scored yet again!
Alec Lawrence tried a long range shot, but the ball went straight to the goal keeper’s hands.
Nicky ‘Rings’ was substituted and Stephen ‘Kimbo’ came on.
Ricco Williams took on Jon Slater, but the ball ran off the field.
Chae ‘Bunny’ was substituted and Alvin Henry came on.
Ashley ‘Dutch’ then took a run down the left wing and crossed the ball to which Tyler made the connection and fired it into the net. The Scouts had finally scored!
The game started to get very exciting as both teams realised that time was moving on and in their plight to score and bring some hope back into winning the final; the Scouts then scored again with Geordie receiving a pass and firing it into the goal.
The scouts had made ‘a come back’ into the game, but time was running out.
Chris Owen then tried another shot in his eagerness to put Two Boats Rowdies well into the lead, but the ball went straight to the goal keeper’s hands.
Alec Lawrence had a pass from Chris Owen, but the ball travelled too fast past him and bounced off the field.
The Final Whistle blew.
Two Rowdies had won the ‘Flipper’ Final for the very first time! There were shouts and cheers of Triumph! Whilst the Scouts realised that their scoring had come rather too late in the game!
Well done to both Teams for a very exciting and entertaining Final!
Congratulations to the Two Boats Rowdies who played really well throughout the whole Tournament and deserved their title ship in the Final.
