The Ascension Island Government in partnership with Babcock and Cable & Wireless is inviting candidates to apply for the second round of the Ascension Island Youth Training Programme.

If the answer to these questions is yes then the Ascension Island youth training programme could help you. The aim is to get you motivated, informed and independent whilst developing your skills to prepare you for your working career. It builds on any skills, knowledge or interests you already have.
The scheme is intended to give you the fundamental building blocks for working on Ascension Island including core skills in health and safety, quality management and communications with facilities management, government services and engineering skills whilst gaining work experience across a variety of teams and organisations. The first year will give you a diverse exposure to different working environments and disciplines and in the second year what you're interested in will dictate what option choices you decide to take to accompany core subjects.
The successful completion of the course will not guarantee you a job with the participating organisations but will give you a competitive edge in job seeking on Ascension.
How long does it take?
The scheme takes about two years.
What qualifications do I get?
An Ascension Island Youth Training Programme certificate along with the IOSH Working Safely certificate plus other qualifications depending on your chosen second year preferences
The Ascension Island Youth Training programme is work-related and will demonstrate the skills you've gained by the compilation of an evidence based portfolio. Assessments take place where you work through observations, assignments and exams.
No specific skills are required but the person must have a reasonable standard of education and a satisfactory school report (copy required). Applicants must be able to demonstrate strong links with Ascension to qualify and have spent at least the last two years of their schooling on Ascension.
Terms of engagement will be similar to that of a household status contract, which means that no accommodation or allowances will be provided. It is therefore expected that the trainee will be living with parents. The successful applicant will be expected to undergo a satisfactory medical examination before formal engagement arrangements are put in place. Normal hours will be 08:00 - 16:30 hours with 1 hour for lunch. There will be a 30 day leave entitlement per year. An allowance of £250 per month will be paid in the first year rising to £300 per month in the second year.
