Past week’s Weather

UK

A cloudy and misty but slightly milder first half of the week. However, bitterly cold conditions with further ice and snow returned from Thursday onwards, causing considerable disruption across the country. Freezing fog also developed by the weekend.

Falklands

Gale force winds and wintry showers to start the week. The rest of the week was mainly cloudy and unsettled with outbreaks of rain, although the weekend saw some sunshine.

Ascension

Frequent showers affected the island on Monday, with around two thirds of our average December rainfall falling on that one day. The rest of the week remained mostly cloudy, with some more slight showers developing by the weekend. Green Mountain remained covered in cloud for much of the week.

St. Helena

A wet and cloudy week, with frequent showers, low cloud and fog on Wednesday and Thursday. The weather improved by the weekend, becoming dry with sunny spells.

I’m dreaming of a sunny Christmas…

While everyone in the UK is debating whether it will be a white Christmas, all we really want here on Ascension is for it to be dry and sunny so we can go to the beach, particularly after the fairly cloudy and showery weather we’ve had recently. Seeing as forecasting even a day ahead on Ascension is a challenge for us at the Met Office, I am not even going to attempt to predict the weather for Christmas day (I get enough moans at meal times as it is!). However, out of interest I have looked back at some of our statistics to get a feel for what Christmas day here has been like in the past. The stats show that at the Airhead over the last 15 years, the average Christmas day has had half cloud cover throughout, one shower, and a maximum temperature of 28.5°C. So we’ll have to wait and see what this Christmas day has in store. We’ll be busy ‘pushing our buttons’ and doing our ‘hocus pocus’ (as a certain pretty lady would say!) in the hope that we get it right! Have a lovely Christmas everyone!
