On Wednesday 16th June 2010 Ascension Island Government Fire & Sea Rescue Service was once again honoured with a request of providing assistance, by availability of the lifeboat and crew, to a visiting party from “10 Training Squadron” Royal Marines based in Poole, Dorset in the UK.

The visiting party, led by Captain Trevor Smith (Training Officer RM), was on island from Monday 14th to Friday 18th June to conduct training and assessment of candidates as part of their 14 week long course aimed at achieving the “Landing Craft Officer Qualification” (LCOQ).

Part of the candidates’ training consisted of an unaided night swim (sea to shore) which took place off North East bay on the evening of Wednesday 16th June. Further visits by “10 Training Squadron” Royal Marines are planned towards the end of the year.

Below is a photograph taken on the evening of Wednesday 16th June prior to the night swim exercise showing the lifeboat & crew along with the Royal Marines.

William Minto

Senior Fire Officer
