Ascension : Queens Baton – Commonwealth Games 2010.
Submitted by The Islander (Islander Editors) 11.02.2010 (Article Archived on 25.02.2010)

When the RMS arrives this Wednesday morning it will be bringing the team carrying the Queens Baton to the island.

They are on their way to the Falklands. Although Ascension is not on the Commonwealth Games list, whilst the Baton is on the island it would be nice to give as many people as possible the opportunity to see it.

When it arrives, it will be met at the Pier Head by a group of previous Games competitors and a group of young people who will be a representative of each of the youth organisations on the island. The Baton will then be carried through the town to the Government building to be met and welcomed to the island by the Administrator.

Thereafter the Baton will be displayed for viewing as follows:-

Wednesday 10th Feb:   Two Boats Club Hall 6 – 7pm

Thursday 11th Feb:       Mountain View Club 6 – 7pm and then on to the Volcano Club Patio until 8pm

Saturday 13th Feb:        Saints Club Cinema Hall  10am – 12 noon

At 8.30am on Friday12th Feb it will be taken to Two Boats School so that the school children there can see it.

On Friday afternoon it is being organised for the youth organisations, (Beavers, Rainbows, Brownies, Cubs, Guides and Scouts) to carry the baton on a relay of the Dewpond run.

This is a unique visit of the Baton to the island and we hope you will visit the different venues to have a look at it and hold it. All are welcome. Even turn out along the roadsides when the Baton is being carried along.
