Past week’s Weather
UK A ridge of high pressure meant a fairly settled start to last week with overnight frosts and fog patches. On Wednesday, Atlantic fronts moved southeast followed by colder conditions again. Wintry showers affected many coastal areas by the weekend with several centimetres of fresh snowfall reported down to sea level in northeast of Scotland.
Falklands Very windy for much of the week with gusts to 55 KT at times. Some rainfall, but also good sunny spells with temperatures rising to 21 C on Thursday.
Ascension A few showers over Green Mountain, otherwise a mostly dry week with sunny periods.
St. Helena A much sunnier week than recently with only a few showers.
Fishy story?
|
My alarm clock duly sounded at 6.30am, so I crawled out of bed and threw on a pair of shorts ready for a quick breakfast. Then it was a dash down to the pier-head in a beaten-up old landrover ready for an adventure of a lifetime? Once on board the boat, our skipper took us out to some deep water, where we hoped we would tempt a few fish onto our bait.
Well, after some time, I think most of us were wondering if this really was a good idea - the sea was rolling and most people seemed to be quietly concentrating on the horizon! Were we ever going to catch anything? Suddenly, one of our fishing reels sprang into life and a rather nice ‘Jackfish’ was duly hauled onto deck. After the requisite photo shots, the ‘Jack’ was returned to the sea to resume its watery life. After that, we continued to fish for a while but with no further bites, and then we returned home. At the end, I think we all agreed that it was a really good morning out, even though we only had limited success.
What did the sardine call the submarine? A can of people!
