Ascension : Flipper Trophy Knockout Competition – Semi Finals Submitted by The Islander (Islander Internet Editor) 05.11.2009 (Article Archived on 19.11.2009)
The 8th running of the annual Flipper Trophy continued last weekend; the tournament is run as a dedication to the memory of Andrew “Flipper” Bennett and both games began with the players and officials standing around the centre circle and being joined by the crowd in observing a minute’s silence.
Retards’ Revenge! Retards 1 v VC Milan 0
In a re-run of last year’s final, the Retards got their revenge on the trophy holders VC Milan.
In the 1st half, Jermaine O’Conner went one v one with the Retards’ Keeper Paul Thomas but fired his shot straight at Paul. In the 2nd half Colin “Shoe” Thomas scored the game’s only goal when he got on the end of a through ball from Eugene Bennett and fired passed Martin Bagley, the VC’s keeper. Gavin Parr was man of the match for his work on the wing for VC.
Hart Attacks kill off Dream Team! Harts 5 v Dream Team 0
A Jeffery Stroud hat-trick set Harts up for a convincing five v nil thrashing of the Dream Team. Jeffrey started the scoring in the first five minutes with a low shot into the bottom left of the net, leaving David Lawrence, the Dream Team’s Keeper stranded. Next Daniel Yon shot at David from the right wing, while at the other end Billy Minto made several John-Terry-like clearances (can there be any higher praise for a defender?) before Darrin Reynolds put the Dream Team’s first dangerous chance wide. Cruyff Buckley also hit a shot wide before Darrel Henry in the Harts goal, punched the ball clear for a corner which was successfully defended.
Cardinal Green looked as though he would double Hart’s lead but his shot from point-blank range was straight at David.
Martin Andrews then hit a through ball so high that “Boot” (senior) shouted that we should warn Conservation that Martin was a danger to the birds.
Jeff Stroud scored his second with a tap in from close range and saved his best goal for last when he put the Harts three ahead after latching on to a high ball on the left of the area and lobbing it beyond David into the net’s corner. Jeffery even had time for another chance before half time, but this time fired wide.
The 2nd half began with Cardinal shooting high and wide, before Justin Wade handled the ball but was relieved when Harts failed to make anything of the resulting free kick. Cardinal forced a good diving save from David before being substituted by “Rocky” Stroud.
The Dream Team’s Alvin Henry watched as his good shot was tipped over the bar by Darrel; the resulting corner came to Marti Andrews who hit the ball high.
Billy then had to leave the pitch to answer his bleeper – was there a fire somewhere wondered the anxious crowd – no, it was Mrs. Minto telling him to come home for supper.
Chrissie George scored the Harts fourth after coming on as a substitute for Jeffery Stroud. He was able to walk the ball into the net after David had run out almost to the half way line to make a clearance and slipped over before connecting with the ball.
Another sub, “Rocky” completed the scoring with a similar goal, poor David was again left stranded in the middle of his own half.
Errol Lawrence nearly got a consolation for the Dreamers with their best chance from a free kick after Cruyff was fouled.
Leon Williams was man of the match for his link up play in the Harts midfield.
Just time for 2 quick questions for Footie Fans: What is red with eighteen legs and can’t beat Fulham? Liverpool! They really should try playing with eleven in their team. And can anyone tell me how many goals Chelsea have scored in their last four games, it’s so many that I’ve lost count – and I’m an Accountant !
Anyway
… the Retards (last year’s beaten finalists) will play the Harts at Long Beach for the tournament final on Saturday from 3.30pm, with cash bar and music to follow. Come and support the teams and the tournament. Geoff
