Ascension : ASCENSION ISLAND BASE TRIATHLON Submitted by The Islander (Nathan Prince) 01.03.2007 (Article Archived on 15.03.2007)
Are you ready for the challenge? Less than 3 weeks to go
Many people have been seen around the island training for the forthcoming Ascension Island Base sponsored triathlon. We also hear there has been some covert training going on from competitors who have yet to declare their intentions. Now is the time to apply. The event is open to anyone and is scheduled to take place on 25th March 2007. It is also open to teams of all standards and will be free to enter. T-shirts will be available to purchase for all participants and supporters, and the event will be followed by a BBQ and presentation in the Officers’, Warrant Officers’ and Sergeants’ Mess at Travellers Hill.
The Ascension Island Triathlon will be a sprint triathlon (half standard) as follows:
750 Metres Sea Swim - in English Bay close to the shore with safety boats and lifeguards in attendance
20 Kilometres Bike Ride - along a route from English Bay through Hogan’s Pass, the USAF Base and to Travellers Hill, avoiding any serious hills
5 Kilometres Run - from Travellers Hill towards Command Hill and return to the finish Line at the gym, again mostly over flat ground
Marshals will be in position at road junctions, water will be available at a number of places along the route and first aiders will be on stand by should they be required.
Don’t be put off, most people who have a reasonable level of fitness should be able to compete and although normally triathlon is an individual event the Ascension Island Triathlon will be open to teams so you can join forces with your friends and complete a leg each, tagging the next member of your team in the transition areas. There will be three main prizes: Best male time, best female time and best team time along with a number of runners up prizes and certificates for all competitors.
Application forms and information packs detailing the route and the rules are now available from either Mike Kempster on 3348 or Sarah Young on 3372. All applications will need to be completed before entering the race. Unfortunately entries on the day cannot be accepted. More information on triathlons and, for the eager ones some suggested training routines, can be found on the British Triathlon website at www.britishtriathlon.org
