Ascension : Opening of some of Green Mountain National Park Paths

Friday 10th November 2006 was the grand Opening of some of the Green Mountain Paths, namely Elliot’s, Ruperts, and Dew Pond.
Friday 10th November 2006 was the grand Opening of some of the Green Mountain Paths, namely Elliot’s, Ruperts, and Dew Pond. Path clearing has been ongoing since April 2006, and two fieldworkers: Colin Cranfield and Carl Richards have been employed by the Ascension Island Government to do the job. It is just over halfway through the project, and just over half of the paths have been cleared. We took this opportunity to celebrate this work, and encourage people to come and see, and come and use the paths.
The event was very successful. The paths were opened by Dick Beales from the Department of International Development (DFID) who manages OTEP the funding body for this project. After an opening speech by Tara Pelembe (AIG Conservation Officer) Dick Beales commented on how pleased OTEP was with this and other projects they have running on Ascension. The paths were opened, and everyone was treated to tea and eats under a marquee in the picnic area.
Following this, members of the Conservation Department took guided walks along the three newly opened paths and there was lots of positive feedback about the work that had been done.
