Ascension : MOVERS, MOVE IT!!
Submitted by The Islander (Nathan Prince) 01.06.2006 (Article Archived on 15.06.2006)

Over the past few weeks Steve Roulston, Serco, recruited the guys and girls from the Movements Flight (UKMAMS and permanent staff) at Ascension Island Base to go up Green Mountain to help clear sections of Rupert’s Path, which was getting a little bit overgrown.

GreenThe path beyond the Tennis Courts up to the Missing Link was in need of a real good thrash!

The team consisted of Kerris Bailey, Dan Evanson, ‘Monkey’ Harris, Callum Galbraith, ‘Straff’ McNair, ‘Zippy’ May, ‘Eric’ Bristow, Dougie Wallace, Claire Hogan, Andy Warner and Sarah Burns; although Sarah almost did not make it because of her morbid fear of Land Crabs!

After two visits and 6 hours of blood, sweat and tears (and a few expletives) the path succumbed to the onslaught.  It was a chain saw massacre without the chain saw, as the team ably led by Steve went at it with great zeal, slashing Guava, Lantana and Buddleia aside.

Even though tough work, everyone really enjoyed the experience especially when they looked back to see the difference.  The Movers certainly showed that they can move vegetation just as good as passengers’ cargo.

After the onslaught!

Thanks and well done team.  Let’s hope the people use the path and keep it well trod.

Steve
