Ascension : BEDFORD HOUSE – ASBESTOS REMOVAL
Submitted by The Islander (Gavin Yon) 30.03.2006 (Article Archived on 13.04.2006)

In December 2005 a survey of Bedford House was carried out by the Royal Engineers.

In December 2005 a survey of Bedford House was carried out by the Royal Engineers.
From the survey it was found that the central partitions in Bedford B are made of Asbestos.
At present this part of Bedford is unoccupied, however previous to the Survey, plans had been made to refurbish this section to increase single accommodation for staff.
Asbestos being a fibrous mineral used throughout the 20th century as a fire retardant material is dangerously damaging to the lungs when inhaled, so it was therefore decided that the Asbestos panels had to be removed before any refurbishment work could be carried out.

Ten members of the Works & Services team were selected to undergo a 5 – day course for Asbestos Removal Operatives & also Asbestos Removal Supervisors.

The Trainers, Mark Bowers & David Mansley  Of TASC (Training & Safety Consultants Ltd) ran the course and explained that a total of 19 modules were covered in the classroom.  Topics ranged from Types, Uses & Risks, Controlled Stripping Techniques, PPE, Transit Procedures & Decontamination, Waste Management & Disposal and Risk Assessments & Plans of works.
A few onsite/practical tasks were also carried out.    The team were given the opportunity to familiarise themselves with their Protective clothing which consists of; A full face powered respirator, disposable overalls & Wellington boot

The Asbestos is completely wrapped & sealed                                               Inside the enclosure - work takes place
                                      - ready for disposal

We are proud to announce that all ten trainees: Larry Francis, Tony Peters, Robert Anthony, Martin Buckley, Jamie Maggot, Barry Phillips, Sam Arms, Ian Fowler, David Lawrence and Mark Constantine have successfully passed the course with a mark of 80% , and all are now qualified to HSE (Health & Safety Executive) Standards.

The removal of Asbestos from Bedford House began on Friday (24th March) and is anticipated to last for 2 weeks.  Bedford House is the first of several buildings to undergo asbestos removal.

Below is the template of the Certificate which each Trainee has received supporting their achievement.
