Ascension : The Runway Dash
Submitted by The Islander (Nathan Prince) 23.03.2006 (Article Archived on 06.04.2006)

The Runway Dash on Sunday 19th March organised by Steve Roulston and SERCO in aid of Two Boats School

The Runway Dash on Sunday 19th March organised by Steve Roulston and SERCO in aid of Two Boats School proved to be a great success.

Runway Dash 2006

Sunday dawned bright and clear with the promise of sunshine Baz had predicted earlier in the week.  Movement on the runway started early to ensure everything was in place for a swift start in case of an unplanned incoming flight.

People started arriving from 9:30 and we were kept busy with keeping the sheets in place as they signed in.  Transport ranged form two legs to four and from two wheels to 8!  We even had a clown turn up too to keep us amused.

There was a moment of panic with shouts of ‘Oh no – she’s got a gun!’ from the crowd as I nervously held the starting pistol in the air!  I shared their concern as I was technically on US soil with a weapon!  As the everyone lined up along the start line there was a lot of laughing and good humour in amongst the serious competitiveness.  With a shot they were off and some moved so quickly they really were just a blur and the crowd were soon spread out along the runway.  A blistering pace was set for the runners by Eric with Milenko and Mike challenging the cyclists.  The skaters were an interesting bunch and luckily had loving parents with them who rescued them in their hour of need!  Roller boots were removed after a short distance proving to be too much effort!  We even had our very own Zola Budd who ended up running the way back in her bare feet!

On the bike front we had a mix of serious competition amongst the professionals, a small pile up at the start, older sisters pinching bikes from younger ones, dads pinching bikes from daughters (and looking very comical indeed!) and young Lily lording it up in her lovely, cool pull along!  Mum Cheryl deserves double points there!  In the ‘race’ between our four legged friends  Finn and Paddy came first with Badger and Sheba dragging along Joshua, Colin and various others at different times.  Finn and Paddy took the short cut home along with others who had run out of energy for the walk back and they hopped on the buses.

Laura K fair pulled mum Nicky and Elizabeth along the runway chattering all the way.  There were a few hardy little ones fed up with being wheeled along who pushed their prams on the home straight.

The USA police officer who followed us all in his official car had a race of his own with Steve Ellick, but we feel it wasn’t quite a fair race!

A couple of bursts of rain helped to cool us all down together with a welcome breeze.

See our photo page for more of the action.  Family shots will be distributed through school.

We will submit photos to Merlin to put on the BFBS2 photo reel.  If you object to your photo being used please contact Two Boats School to let us know.
