Ascension : Church News
Submitted by The Islander (Gavin Yon) 16.03.2006 (Article Archived on 30.03.2006)

It is wonderful when we meet up with someone who has come to Ascension Island to see for themselves where a relative or a friend of theirs had spent a part of their working life.

Dear Friends,
It is wonderful when we meet up with someone who has come to Ascension Island to see for themselves where a relative or a friend of theirs had spent a part of their working life. Occasionally one even comes into contact with someone who was born , baptised, confirmed or even married here.
Last week I had the privilege of speaking to a few people in St. Mary's Church who had come to visit or returned after being away from the Island for a number if years.   What was most encouraging for one visitor and myself was the fact that having being told that  her father was a Reader in St. Mary's we were able to trace that back in the Register of Services where we found his name and signature.
Sunday, 12 March, which was the second Sunday in Lent, we celebrated the mystery of Christ's transfiguration on the Mountain.  It was a wonderful experience for Peter, James and John so much so that Peter said "It was wonderful for us to be here"  Then the voice from the cloud "This is my Son, the Beloved.  Listen to him".  God's call to listen to his Son is still relevant for us today.  How much of our time are we setting aside to hear what His Son has to say to us?
We are living in a busy world and often find ourselves  running around with little or no time to spare for anything else.  As we continue with the Lent Season it would be helpful to take some time out to be with Jesus and to listen to what he has to say to us and to act on it as well.
Have a pleasant week.

Canon Clive
