As the Flu epidemic seems to have caused a lack of news, here is a brief look at the New Year news on Ascension Island over the past few decades.

As the Flu epidemic seems to have caused a lack of news, here is a brief look at the New Year news on Ascension Island over the past few decades.
January 1976:
Instructions on how to Pasteurise and skim your (purchased) milk to stop it going sour within 24 hours. Notice of the introduction of St Helena pound notes as a replacement for Pounds Sterling. A Telegram from the Prime Minister, James Callaghan, sending his warm wishes and assurances of progress. N.B. The Islander is still awaiting a Telegram from Tony Blair.
January 1986:
‘Most Travelled’ Pass Ascension When the RMS St Helena called into Ascension on 21st January 1986 she was carrying the a gentleman by the name of John Clouse who, having so-far visited 307 places, was officially listed in the Guinness Book of Records at that time as the ‘Most Travelled Man’ in the world. Also on board was the world’s ‘Most Travelled Woman’, Edi Irish, and also John Clouse’s 6 year old son, Chauncey, who was the world’s ‘Most Travelled Youngster’.
January 1996:
H.R.H. Princess Anne, The Princess Royal, paid a brief visit to Ascension. Meeting a cross section of Ascension’s population as well as a few turtles. Georgetown shop started closing on Thursday afternoons.
